From Bengal Youth Champion to India U-19 Camp: Avijit Ghosh Brings a Strong Development Background to Pune Pioneers FC

Pune Pioneers FC appoint former professional goalkeeper Avijit Ghosh as Goalkeeping Coach, adding a football professional whose journey includes national age-group success, elite academy education and international exposure.

A successful football career is often built long before a player reaches the professional stage. Youth competitions, structured academy environments and opportunities to represent a state or country can play a defining role in shaping a footballer’s development.

For Avijit Ghosh, the foundations of his football journey were established through Bengal’s age-group football system and his time at Tata Football Academy. Now appointed Goalkeeping Coach at Pune Pioneers FC, he brings that experience into an academy environment focused on developing the next generation.

His early achievements include national championship success with Bengal, international exposure through Tata Football Academy and participation in an India U-19 camp and tour.

National success with Bengal

Ghosh’s youth football career included two significant national achievements.

In 2002, he was part of the Bengal U-16 team that won the National Championship, earning a gold medal. This was an important milestone in his development and provided early experience of competing successfully at national level.

Four years later, he was part of another Bengal team that achieved national success. In 2006, Bengal won the U-19 National Championship, also known as the Dr B.C. Roy Trophy, with Ghosh part of the gold-medal-winning team.

These achievements represent important stages in his progression from youth football towards the professional game.

Tata Football Academy and international exposure

Between 2003 and 2007, Ghosh was associated with Tata Football Academy, one of the established names in Indian football development.

His time at the academy included an international tour to England in 2005, during which the team won the Wells Cup.

The experience provided exposure beyond domestic competition and formed part of his development before entering senior professional football.

In 2006, Ghosh was also involved in an India U-19 international camp and tour to Sri Lanka. This represented another significant opportunity in his youth career, placing him within the national age-group football environment.

He subsequently participated in the M. Dutta Ray Trophy with Bengal U-21 in 2008, continuing his involvement in representative football.

From youth football to the professional game

Ghosh’s progression eventually took him into senior club football.

He represented East Bengal FC during the 2008–09 and 2009–10 seasons. He was part of the squad that won the Federation Cup in 2009–10 and the Calcutta Football League Premier Division in 2010. He also participated in the AFC Cup in 2010.

His playing career continued with Air India FC, Mumbai Tigers, Sreebhumi Samiti, Aryan FC and Royal Wahingdoh FC.

With Royal Wahingdoh, he was part of the team that finished third in the 2014–15 I-League season. The club also finished as runners-up in the Shillong Premier League in 2015.

His journey therefore covers several important stages of Indian football: national youth championships, academy development, representative football and senior professional competition.

Taking experience into coaching

After his playing career, Ghosh moved into specialist coaching, beginning in 2017.

His coaching assignments have included Hooghly District Sports Association, Kalyani Football League, Kolkata Soccer Academy, Suruchi Sangha, Khidderpore SC, Kalighat MS, City AC, George Telegraph FC and SKM Sports Foundation.

He holds an AIFF C Coaching Licence and has worked in both youth and senior football environments, including the AIFF U-17 Youth League.

This background gives him experience of the different stages through which young footballers can progress.

A new opportunity at Pune Pioneers FC

Ghosh will oversee goalkeeper development across all age groups at Pune Pioneers FC, working with players in the residential academy at Wagholi and the non-residential evening academy programme.

His appointment adds a specialist dimension to the club’s coaching structure. The early response to his sessions has been positive, with players responding well and fellow coaches observing encouraging improvements in the goalkeepers’ work.

For an academy focused on youth development, his own journey offers an interesting connection between early age-group success and the demands of professional football.

From winning national championships with Bengal to representing established clubs in the senior game, Ghosh has experienced several stages of the football pathway.

At Pune Pioneers FC, the next chapter of that journey will involve helping young goalkeepers develop their abilities and prepare for the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.
