MUMBAI — Close your eyes in any great film and the picture disappears, but the place remains. A railway platform at dusk. A market lane an hour before the shutters come down. A courtyard where a festival is still some distance away and already audible. Long before an actor speaks, sound has told the audience where they are, and whether to believe it.

For productions set in India, that promise is hard to keep. The country’s acoustic character shifts with every street, season and hour, and it is difficult to reproduce from a generic catalogue.

A sound engineer has spent his career on the other side of that problem, and has now built a different answer to it.

Manipulate Audio Library, presented by its founders as India’s first original library dedicated to authentic Indian ambience, has been created for professional film and media sound. It is a venture of Manipulate & Family, founded and owned by Dushyant Shah, an sound engineer, Supervising Sound Editor and Re-recording Mixer based in Mumbai.

The invisible half of the frame , Ambience is the least visible layer of a soundtrack and one of the most consequential. It gives a location its identity, lets dialogue sit naturally in a space, and carries the emotional temperature of a scene without announcing itself. When it is right, nobody notices. When it is wrong, audiences sense that something is off even if they cannot say what.

The usual remedies are costly. A full location recording for every production demands time, travel and access that schedules rarely allow. The alternative, a stand-in sound that is almost right, quietly flattens the world a director has worked to build.

A library recorded where life happens

Manipulate Audio Library holds original recordings captured in real Indian environments in high definition. The collection is organised for professional discovery, so that an ambience editor or re-recording mixer can find a place and bring it directly into a session.

The approach is deliberately simple. Rather than synthesise or approximate, the library records the places themselves and makes them available to the people who need them: streets and markets, villages, stations, temples, neighbourhoods, festivals and open landscapes.

The Person behind it

The idea came from the working day of a sound professional. Shah’s practice runs across the full length of a film’s soundtrack: dialogue editing, ambience and sound effects editing, hard and soft effects, ADR and dubbing editing, and re-recording mixing. He also records and mixes music, and works in immersive formats including Dolby Atmos.

From that position, he recognised how valuable a dependable source of genuine Indian recordings would be to colleagues across the industry. Manipulate Audio Library is the result of that recognition: a resource built by a working sound editor for working sound teams.

Proposed founder quote — pending approval by Dushyant Shah: “When a story is set in India, the audience should hear India, not an approximation of it. This library exists so that sound teams can begin with the real thing.”

For the people who build a film’s world

The library is designed for production sound mixers, Supervising Sound Editors, ambience editors, Foley and sound effects editors, and re-recording mixers, as well as filmmakers, production houses and post-production studios. Game sound designers form part of its intended audience.

Its reach is not limited to Indian cinema. International productions that set stories in India face the same challenge, often with less access to the locations themselves. For those teams, a catalogue of authentic recordings offers a practical way to build Indian environments with accuracy.

Access to genuine location sound can help teams work more efficiently, strengthen a scene’s sense of place, and reduce reliance on generic stand-ins. It does not replace the craft of sound design and mixing. It supplies that craft with better material.

Licensing and bespoke recording

The company offers royalty-free sound licensing, subject to its applicable licence terms. Productions that need something the library does not yet hold can commission custom sound recording of a particular location, environment or sound.

A long view

Shah’s own website speaks of a commitment to mentoring the next generation of sound professionals, and describes Manipulate Audio as community-led. The library reflects that outlook: it treats India’s sonic diversity as a body of work worth recording with care and sharing with those who tell the country’s stories on screen.

Film is a medium of illusion, but the best illusions rest on something true. For sound, that begins with the place itself.
