The Sports Authority of India (SAI), under the aegis of the Government of India, recently conducted the Selection Trials for the Indian Karate Squad for the upcoming official international events, including the prestigious Asian Games, held at Shillong, Meghalaya.

It is a moment of immense honour and pride for Bengal that Mr. Premjit Sen, an internationally acclaimed Karate Master, senior official, and one of India’s most respected referees, was appointed as a Jury Member for this highly significant selection process.

A Senior Referee of both the World Karate Federation (WKF) and the Asian Karate Federation (AKF), Mr. Sen’s appointment reflects his exemplary technical knowledge, decades of experience, and unwavering commitment to the growth and integrity of Karate in India. His contribution to the sport — both on and off the mat — continues to inspire athletes and officials across the country.

The Selection Trials were graced by Sh. D.K. Mittal, Executive Director (RC Guwahati), and Sh. Triratna Chavan, Deputy Director (STC Shillong), from the Sports Authority of India. Their motivating presence and guidance contributed greatly to the smooth and successful conduct of the event.

The trials were meticulously organised under the leadership of Sh. Sunil Rathee, High Performance Director, Khelo India State Centre of Excellence, Shillong; Tournament Director; former National Champion; and SAI Coach. His exceptional management and professionalism ensured a transparent and high-standard selection process.

Adding to Bengal’s pride, Ms. Debanjali Karmakar, the Golden Girl of Bengal Karate, showcased her excellence by securing 2nd Place at the Open Selection Trials conducted to form the Indian National Karate Squad in preparation for the upcoming international tournaments, including the Asian Games.

Expressing his gratitude, Mr. Premjit Sen said:

“It is indeed a great honour to be entrusted with this responsibility by the Sports Authority of India. I am deeply committed to contributing my best towards the growth, transparency, and global excellence of Indian Karate.”

Sharing his heartfelt appreciation, Hanshi Joydeb Mondal, General Secretary of the Karate Do Association of Bengal (KAB), remarked:

“Premjit Sen is truly an asset to Bengal and Indian Karate. His lifelong dedication and service to the sport have elevated its standard across the nation. I am extremely happy for Ms. Debanjali Karmakar for her outstanding performance, and I pray for her continued success.”

He further added, “My sincere appreciation also goes to Shihan Balkrishan Damani and Sensei Sushan Thapa for their appointment as Technical Members in this prestigious event.”

The Bengal Olympic Association and the entire sports fraternity of Bengal extend their heartiest congratulations to Mr. Premjit Sen, Ms. Debanjali Karmakar, and the entire Bengal contingent for bringing immense pride and glory to Bengal and to Indian Karate
